If there's one tip Camp Kindling families share over and over, it's this: bring a festival trolley or wagon. These are wheeled trolleys or wagons that parents repurpose and customise for festival life β and they're incredibly handy when you've got kids and gear to move around. We don't have trolleys available for hire onsite, so you'll need to bring your own. (Don't worry about the walk from the car park though β we offer a Porter service to help carry your things to and from your vehicle.)
Uses
Arrival: Load up your trolley and wheel your luggage from the car to the campsite in one trip.
During the weekend: Use it as a mobile base for your daypacks, snacks, and your kids. Trolleys carry much more than a buggy and are easier to pull over uneven ground.
Departure: Wheel everything back to the car without the juggling act.
Types
Folding Trolley
Folding trolleys hold less weight but pack down smaller, which is great if boot space is tight. Their wheels tend to be smaller, so they can be a little harder to pull over uneven ground.
Garden Trolley
Garden trolleys are heavier duty and can carry more weight β perfect for bigger families or lots of gear. The trade-off is they take up more room in your car since they don't fold down as small (you can unbolt them, but it takes tools and time). Their larger, air-filled wheels handle bumpy ground much more easily, though they are heavier to pull.
Customisations
Festival trolleys aren't specifically designed for carrying kids, so you'll want to use your own judgement on what's safe for your family. Here are some popular ways to make your trolley even more useful:
Lights
Wrap some fairy lights, LED rope, or electroluminescent wire around your trolley. It makes it easy to spot at night and creates a cosy little base where your kids can play nearby without getting lost in the dark.
Cover
Some trolleys come with a rain or shade cover, or you can make your own. A removable cover is ideal β easy to pop on when the weather turns and take off when the sun comes out.
Linings
Line the base with mats, blankets, and cushions so it's comfy for the kids to sit in. Bring a few extra blankets to tuck over them if they doze off during the evening.
Decorations
Keep it simple with some bunting or flowers, or go all out and turn it into a spaceship! Decorating the trolley can be a fun family project before the weekend even starts.
