CAPTURE THE FLAG

Sneak, sprint and outsmart the other team to grab their flag and race it home. The classic childhood game, with the whole forest to play in.

What is capture the flag?

Capture the flag is a classic outdoor team game. Two teams each guard a flag in their own territory. The aim is to sneak into the other team's side, grab their flag and carry it back to your base without being tagged, all while protecting your own flag. It's a thrilling mix of speed, strategy, daring and teamwork, and it's loved by children and grown-ups alike.

What are the rules of capture the flag?

The playing area is split into two halves, one for each team, with a flag placed somewhere in each. On your own side, you're safe and can tag any opponent who crosses over. On the other team's side, you can be tagged.

If you're tagged in enemy territory, you usually head to a jail area until a teammate sneaks over and tags you out of jail. The first team to bring the other team's flag back to their own side wins. Rules often change a little from game to game, so listen carefully to your Activity Leader before you start.

What are the best tactics for capture the flag?

Split your team into attackers and defenders, so your flag is never left unguarded. Send a decoy runner one way to draw defenders off while someone else slips in from the other side. Use trees, bushes and dips in the ground for cover, and move quietly. Most importantly, talk to each other. The team that plans together usually wins together.

Is capture the flag good for kids?

It's brilliant for kids, and just as much fun for grown-ups brave enough to join in. Everyone gets a role, whether they love to sprint, sneak or guard. Children practise teamwork, quick thinking and good sportsmanship without even noticing, and there's nothing like the cheer when someone races home with the flag. Playing in the woods adds an extra layer of adventure, with natural hiding spots everywhere.

What should we wear for capture the flag?

Wear closed-toe shoes you can run in, as woodland ground is full of roots, sticks and uneven patches. Comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting a bit muddy are best. The game involves plenty of running on and off, so bring a water bottle and have a drink before you start.
