DJ MIXING
Headphones on, fingers on the faders and the dancefloor in your hands. DJ mixing is a brilliant way for young music lovers to get creative.
DJ mixing is the art of playing recorded music and blending one track smoothly into the next, so the music never stops. DJs choose the songs, match their speeds and use a mixer to fade between them, adding effects along the way. It's a mix of music taste, timing and technique. Whether it's a party, a radio show or a festival stage, the DJ's job is to keep everyone dancing.
Turntables play vinyl records, and they're the classic DJ setup. Scratching, where the DJ moves a record back and forth by hand to make a rhythmic sound, started on turntables.
CDJs and media players play digital music files, with a big jog wheel on top that works a bit like a record.
A DJ controller puts two decks and a mixer into one unit that plugs into a laptop. It's a popular way to start.
The mixer sits in the middle. It has a fader for each track, a crossfader to swap between them and EQ knobs that control the bass, middle and high sounds.
Beatmatching means getting two tracks playing at exactly the same speed, so their beats line up. The speed of a song is measured in beats per minute, or BPM. DJs listen to the next track in their headphones, adjust its speed with the pitch fader and nudge it until the beats match. Then they bring it in using the faders and EQ. When it's done well, you can't hear the join at all.
Your Activity Leader starts with a tour of the decks and mixer, showing what each button, knob and fader does. Then you'll learn how to choose tracks that work well together, cue up the next song in your headphones and beatmatch it. Finally, you'll try blending from one track to another and adding effects like echoes and filters. It takes practice, but that first smooth mix feels amazing.
Yes, it's a fantastic creative skill for young music fans. It helps them listen carefully, count beats and think about what makes people want to dance. It's hands-on, and progress is easy to hear, as each mix sounds a little smoother than the last. Grown-ups can have a go too, of course, and there's nothing quite like a friendly family debate over which song should come next.
DO WE NEED ANY EXPERIENCE?
Not at all. You'll learn what everything on the decks does from the very start.
WHAT IS A CROSSFADER?
It's a slider on the mixer that moves the sound from one track to the other.
HOW CAN WE LOOK AFTER OUR EARS?
Keep headphone volume at a comfortable level and take breaks from loud music. Do not turn the headphones up to drown out the room.
