PUZZLE RACING
Grab your team, beat the clock and discover how the fastest pit crews in motor racing work together. Puzzles, teamwork and a race to the finish.
Puzzle racing is a team challenge where you solve a puzzle as fast as you can, against the clock and against other teams. The trick is to work like a motor racing pit crew: everyone has a job, you plan before you start and you practise until it's smooth. Each round, you try to beat your last time. It's teamwork, clear thinking and a surprising amount of excitement.
In top level motor racing, a pit crew can change all four tyres in just a few seconds. They manage it by working scientifically. Every person has one clear job and knows exactly where to stand. The tools are laid out ready. They practise the same moves again and again, then look at what slowed them down and fix it. None of it relies on rushing. It relies on planning, teamwork and good communication.
Your Activity Leader explains the challenge and shares a few pit crew tips. Then you have a first go and set a time. After that, your team talks about what went well and what didn't. Who does which part? Where should the pieces go? Then you race again and try to shave off a few more seconds. There may be a final race between teams, with points up for grabs for your Patrol (the team you join when you arrive).
Split the jobs. One person sorts pieces, another builds and someone keeps an eye on the plan.
Lay everything out first, so nobody wastes time searching.
Talk to each other. Short, clear calls help everyone know what's happening.
Practise and review. Every go teaches you something, even the slow ones.
Yes, it's made for mixed teams. Younger children can sort pieces or call out the next step, while older ones and grown-ups take on the trickier parts. Everyone has a role that matters, which is exactly how a real pit crew works. Watching your family's time drop round after round is a lovely feeling, whatever the final result.
DO WE NEED TO BE GOOD AT PUZZLES?
Not at all. Puzzle racing is about teamwork and planning, so every member of the family can help.
IS PUZZLE RACING VERY COMPETITIVE?
There's a clock and a bit of friendly rivalry, but the main aim is to beat your own team's best time.
WHAT DO PIT CREWS HAVE TO DO WITH PUZZLES?
Pit crews show how planning, clear roles and practice make a team faster. The same ideas work for solving puzzles.
