WOODLAND THEATRE
Step into the trees and into a story. Woodland theatre turns the forest into a stage where the whole family can play, imagine and make believe together.
Woodland theatre is interactive drama that takes place outdoors among the trees. Instead of sitting in rows watching a stage, families join in with drama games, storytelling, characters and make-believe, using the forest itself as the set and the inspiration. It can include music, puppets and movement, and every story is shaped by the people taking part.
The woods are full of ready-made story ideas. A hollow tree becomes a doorway, a fallen log becomes a bridge, and a pile of leaves might be hiding something magical. Children find it easy to imagine when the setting already feels like a fairytale, and grown-ups often find it easier to let go and play too. Even the sounds of birdsong, wind and crunching leaves become part of the show.
Outdoor theatre also has a long tradition of its own, from open-air plays in parks and gardens to storytelling around a fire.
Your Activity Leader starts with warm-up games to get everyone moving, laughing and using their imagination. Then the story begins. You might invent characters inspired by the plants and creatures around you, act out scenes together, make sound effects, sing or help a puppet on an adventure. Some sessions are led as an interactive show, where the audience helps the characters solve a problem. Joining in is always encouraged, but it's fine to watch too.
Yes, and it's made for the whole family to share. Drama games help children build confidence, express ideas and work as a team, all while having a lot of fun. There's no script to learn and no right or wrong way to join in, so quieter children can take their time while bolder ones leap straight in. It's a lovely way to see your children's imaginations take flight, and to join in yourself.
Dress for the woods. The ground can be muddy and uneven, with roots and stumps underfoot, so sturdy closed-toe shoes or wellies are best. Bring layers and a waterproof if the weather looks changeable, and wear clothes you don't mind getting a bit grubby.
DO WE NEED ANY ACTING EXPERIENCE?
Not at all. Woodland theatre is about play and imagination, and there are no lines to learn.
DO GROWN-UPS JOIN IN TOO?
Yes, if they'd like to. The whole family is invited to take part, but nobody has to perform if they'd rather watch.
IS WOODLAND THEATRE SAFE?
Woodland venues have uneven, muddy ground with roots and stumps, so trips and falls can happen when moving around or between scenes. Wear sturdy shoes, watch where you step and walk rather than run between scenes. Do not climb on logs or trees unless the Activity Leader says so.
