Archery Battles

ARCHERY BATTLES
Grab a bow, duck behind cover and dodge the foam arrows. Archery Battles has all the thrill of paintball without the paint.
Archery battles is a team game where two sides shoot foam-tipped arrows at each other using lightweight bows. Everyone wears a full face mask, takes cover behind barriers or trees and tries to tag players on the other team without getting hit. It's also known as combat archery, and it mixes real bow skills with the running, hiding and teamwork of paintball or dodgeball.
Two teams start at opposite ends of the playing area, with a no-go zone in the middle that keeps everyone at a safe distance. When the Activity Leader gives the signal, the battle begins. Players move between cover, pick their moment and shoot. If an arrow hits you, you're out. In some games, catching an arrow from the other team brings one of your teammates back in, so there's always a chance to turn things around.
Games come in different styles. In elimination, the last team with players standing wins. Others are about capturing a flag, protecting one chosen player or knocking down targets on the other team's side.
Your Activity Leader starts with a safety briefing and the rules of the game, then makes sure everyone's face mask fits properly. Next comes a quick run through the basics: how to hold the bow, nock a foam-tipped arrow onto the string and draw back smoothly. A few practice shots help everyone warm up. Then it's into quick rounds of play, with time to plan new tactics between games.
It's a fantastic one to play together, and children tend to love the chance to tag a grown-up. The bows are light and easy to pull back, so size and strength matter far less than quick thinking, good teamwork and a sharp eye. A foam-tipped arrow can still sting a little and leave a bruise, which is why masks stay on from the first whistle to the last.
Closed-toe shoes with a good grip and comfortable clothes you can run, crouch and dodge in. Games are often played outdoors on uneven ground or among trees, so dress for the weather and a bit of mud. Leave dangly jewellery behind and tie back long hair so it doesn't catch on the bowstring.
DO WE NEED ANY ARCHERY EXPERIENCE?
Not at all. Your Activity Leader shows everyone how to use the bow before the first game.
ARE ARCHERY BATTLES SAFE?
Foam-tipped arrows can cause bruising, so full face masks must be worn at all times. Do not take your mask off in the playing area, even between rounds. Do not cross into the no-go zone. Collisions with other players or barriers, and trips on uneven ground, can also happen, so watch where you run.
HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM NORMAL ARCHERY?
Target archery is about precision at a still target. Archery battles uses the same basic bow skills but adds moving targets, cover and teamwork, with soft foam tips instead of sharp ones.
IS IT LIKE PAINTBALL?
It has the same team-game thrill, but with foam-tipped arrows and no paint.
