Sand Pit

SAND PIT
Dig, scoop, pat and build. Grab a spade and let little hands and big imaginations get to work on the ultimate sandcastle.
A sand pit is an outdoor play area filled with soft play sand, where children can dig, pour, build and explore at their own pace. It's open play, so there's no right or wrong way to do it. Little ones make castles, moats and tunnels, and grown-ups often find it hard to resist joining in.
Building is the classic. Damp sand holds its shape far better than dry sand, so pack it firmly into a bucket, tip it over and tap the top for a perfect turret. Add a moat, a tunnel or a winding road, and decorate with pine cones, sticks and leaves.
Digging is just as much fun. How deep can you go? Bury each other's feet, hide little treasures and take turns hunting for them, or dig a channel and imagine a river running through it.
Simple tools make it even better. Spades, scoops, buckets, sieves and moulds turn a heap of sand into a building site, a bakery or a dinosaur dig.
Sand play is hands-on and wonderfully imaginative. Scooping, pouring and patting give little hands plenty of practice, and building together means sharing tools, taking turns and making plans. Many children find the feel of sand absorbing and calming, and it's lovely to watch a simple heap become a whole kingdom.
Yes. A sand pit is a space to enjoy together, so a grown-up stays with little ones the whole time. It's a great chance to slow down, sit on the edge and help build the tallest tower you can manage, or simply watch the stories unfold. Older brothers and sisters often love taking charge of the big building projects too.
Wear clothes you don't mind getting sandy, and bring a sun hat and sun cream on bright days. Sand gets everywhere, so a quick shake of shoes and socks before you head off saves a lot of crunchy tent floors later. Baby wipes or a small towel are handy for sandy hands. Pop a spare set of clothes in your bag for little ones who end up happily covered from head to toe.
IS SAND PLAY SAFE?
Sand play is low risk, but a grown-up must stay with little ones at all times. Do not throw sand, and keep it away from eyes and mouths. If sand gets into an eye, do not rub it. Rinse it gently with clean water instead.
WHAT MAKES THE BEST SANDCASTLE?
Damp sand, packed down firmly. Fill your bucket, press the sand in hard, flip it over quickly and give the top a tap before you lift.
CAN OLDER CHILDREN JOIN IN?
Yes. Older children often love big projects like castles, moats and tunnels, and they make brilliant helpers for younger brothers and sisters.
