TIKTOK DANCES
Learn the moves everyone is copying, then put your heads together and make up a routine that is all your own.
TikTok dances are short, catchy dance routines set to a snippet of a song and shared as videos on the TikTok app. Each one is only a few moves long, so it's quick to learn and easy to copy. When lots of people learn the same routine and film their own version, it becomes a trend or a dance challenge.
Most trends borrow from styles you might already know. Some are full of hip hop moves, with bounces, arm waves and sharp poses. Others take ideas from pop and K-pop routines, where lots of people move in perfect sync.
There are also hand dances, sometimes called tutting, where almost all the action happens with your arms and fingers, so they work sitting down. Some trends are simple and silly, made for families to do together, while others are fast and full of tricky footwork. The fun is in giving each one your own little twist.
Your Activity Leader starts with a warm-up to get everyone moving. Then you learn a few well-known routines, one small chunk at a time. Dancers count music in groups of eight, so you'll hear lots of five, six, seven, eight. Once the moves start to stick, you run them with the music until they flow.
Next comes the creative part. You work together as a group to choreograph a brand new routine, choosing the moves, the formation and the big finish.
Yes, and it's a lovely way for children and grown-ups to swap roles for a change. Many children already know the latest trends and love showing a parent how it's done. The routines are short, so nobody gets lost, and there's no right way to look while you're dancing. Shy dancers can stand at the back until they feel ready, and confident ones can take the front row.
Wear whatever you like, as long as you can move in it. Trainers or other comfy shoes are a good idea, and a bottle of water is handy for between songs.
DO WE NEED A TIKTOK ACCOUNT?
No. You don't need the app, an account or a phone to learn the dances. It's all about the moves.
DO WE NEED ANY DANCE EXPERIENCE?
Not at all. The routines are taught step by step and are made for complete beginners.
WHAT DOES CHOREOGRAPH MEAN?
To choreograph a dance is to plan and put together the moves in order. In a TikTok dance session, you make up your own short routine as a group.
