Ultimate Frisbee

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Throw, catch, run and cheer. Ultimate Frisbee is fast, friendly and surprisingly easy to pick up. Perfect for a family with a competitive streak.

What is Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate Frisbee is a fast, non-contact team sport played with a flying disc. Two teams pass the disc from player to player and score by catching it in the end zone they're attacking, a bit like a try in rugby. You can't run while holding the disc, so teamwork is everything. The sport's official name is simply Ultimate.

What are the rules of Ultimate?

Once you catch the disc, you stop and keep one foot planted, a bit like a pivot in netball. You then have a few seconds to pass it to a teammate before the player marking you counts you out. If a pass is dropped, knocked down, caught by the other team or goes out of bounds, the other team takes over.

One of the best bits is the Spirit of the Game. Ultimate is usually self-refereed, so players call their own fouls and are trusted to play fair.

What are the main Ultimate Frisbee throws?

The backhand is the one most people know. Swing the disc across your body and release it flat, with a flick of the wrist.

The forehand, also called the flick, is thrown from the side with two fingers under the rim, a bit like skimming a stone.

The hammer is thrown overhead, so the disc flies upside down and drops in over defenders.

For catching, the pancake catch is the safest. Put one hand on top and one underneath, then clap the disc between them.

What happens at a first Ultimate Frisbee session?

Your Activity Leader starts with a warm-up and the basics of throwing and catching, often in pairs. Once everyone has the feel of the disc, you learn how to move into space, mark an opponent and pass up the pitch. Then it's time for a friendly game, with plenty of cheering for every catch.

Is Ultimate Frisbee good for kids?

Yes, and it's a great one for the whole family to play together. Because it's non-contact and the rules are simple, children can join in quickly, and grown-ups soon realise how much running there is. It rewards teamwork, fair play and quick thinking more than size or strength, so everyone gets a chance to shine.

What should we wear for Ultimate Frisbee?

Clothes you can move freely in, and trainers or similar shoes with good grip. A water bottle and a sun hat are good ideas on warm days.

FAQ
DO WE NEED ANY EXPERIENCE?

Not at all. Your Activity Leader starts with the basics, and all the kit is provided.

IS ULTIMATE FRISBEE SAFE?

It's a non-contact sport, but as a running, catching game played outdoors, trips, collisions with other players and falls on uneven ground can happen. Warm up first and keep an eye on the players around you, not just the disc. Do not dive for the disc on hard or uneven ground.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ULTIMATE AND DISC GOLF?

Ultimate is a team game where you pass the disc to score in an end zone. Disc golf is about throwing a disc into a series of baskets in as few throws as possible.
