MUSICAL PLAY AREA

Shakers, drums and chimes, all ready for little hands. A relaxed space where the youngest campers make up their own music, with grown-ups joining in.

What is a musical play area?

A musical play area is a relaxed space where babies, toddlers and young children can explore sound and make up their own music. It's filled with simple, child-friendly instruments like drums, shakers, xylophones, bells and chimes, and there are no rules about what to play. Little ones bang, shake and tap at their own pace, with grown-ups joining in alongside.

What instruments might we find?

Most musical play spaces are full of percussion, because it's the easiest kind of music for small hands. Hand drums and tambourines are great for banging. Maracas, egg shakers and rain sticks make soft, swishing sounds. Xylophones and glockenspiels let children tap out their first tunes, and bells and wind chimes add a bit of sparkle. Sometimes there are homemade instruments too, like pots, pans and wooden spoons, which are often the biggest hit of all.

Why is musical play good for little ones?

Musical play is a lovely, hands-on way for young children to explore the world. Shaking, tapping and banging helps them discover that their actions make sounds, and it's a chance to practise listening, copying and taking turns. There's no right or wrong way to play, so every little musician can feel proud of what they make. Many parents find it's a calm, happy break in a busy day too.

How can grown-ups join in with musical play?

Follow your child's lead. If they tap a rhythm, copy it back and see if they copy you in return. Try playing loud and then very quiet, fast and then slow, or stop and freeze together when the music pauses. Singing a well-loved nursery rhyme while you shake along works beautifully. Most of all, get stuck in and have fun, because little ones love it when a grown-up plays properly alongside them.

Is a musical play area suitable for babies?

Yes. Babies can enjoy lying back and listening, reaching for a soft shaker or feeling the vibration of a drum on a grown-up's lap. Toddlers tend to dash from one instrument to the next, and older children might start making up songs and little performances. It's a space you can drop in and out of, staying as long as your little one is happy.

FAQ
DO WE NEED ANY MUSICAL EXPERIENCE?

Not at all. There are no songs to learn and no wrong way to play.

CAN GROWN-UPS JOIN IN?

Yes, and they're always encouraged to. Young children should be watched by a grown-up the whole time. Do not leave little ones on their own, and keep small parts away from mouths.

IS IT VERY NOISY?

It can get lively. Ear defenders are a good idea for babies and anyone sensitive to loud sounds.
