Jungle Rhythm Makers & Movers

A little girl with a painted heart on her cheek laughs as she dances with a grown-up in a tent during Jungle Rhythm Makers & Movers at Camp Kindling

JUNGLE RHYTHM MAKERS & MOVERS

Make a jungle shaker, find the beat and join a wild parade. Little ones shake, stomp and dance their way through the jungle.

What is Jungle Rhythm Makers & Movers?

Jungle Rhythm Makers & Movers is a lively music and movement session for young children. Each child makes their own jungle shaker, then uses it in rhythm games, animal movement activities and a noisy jungle parade. The session ends with dance games and playful movement. It's a drop-off session run by an Activity Leader, made for energetic little ones.

How do you make a shaker?

A shaker is one of the simplest musical instruments there is. At its heart, it's a closed container with something small inside that rattles when you shake it. Dried rice, lentils, beans or seeds all work, and each one makes a slightly different sound. Rice gives a soft swish, while beans make a bolder rattle.

Maracas are a well-known kind of shaker, and many cultures around the world have their own versions. The fun part of making one is decorating it, so it looks as wild as it sounds.

What are rhythm games?

Rhythm games help children feel and follow a beat. In a copycat game, one person plays a short pattern and everyone copies it back. Others play with contrasts: loud and quiet, fast and slow, stop and go. Children love the surprise of a sudden freeze.

Animal movement games bring the jungle to life. Little ones might tiptoe like a tiger, stomp like an elephant, flap like a parrot or swing like a monkey, all while keeping time with their shakers. A jungle parade brings it all together, with everyone marching, shaking and dancing in one big, joyful line.

Is music and movement good for young children?

Many children find music and movement a joyful way to burn off energy and express themselves. Shaking to a beat, copying patterns and moving like animals all involve listening, co-ordination and imagination. Taking part in a parade or a dance game can help quieter children feel more confident too. Most of all, it's simply great fun.

What should we pack for our child?

As it's a drop-off session, make sure your child has everything they need while you're away. Sunscreen, a drink and some warmer layers for the cooler parts of the forest are all good ideas, along with shoes they can dance and run in. Please come back to collect your child at the finish time, as children cannot leave on their own.

FAQ
DO PARENTS STAY FOR JUNGLE RHYTHM MAKERS & MOVERS?

No. It's a drop-off session, so your child plays with the Activity Leader while you take a break. You'll need to come back and collect them at the finish time.

IS IT SAFE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN?

Energetic movement games and the parade can lead to trips, bumps and falls, especially when children move quickly. Dress your child in shoes with a good grip. Do not let children put shaker fillings like rice or beans in their mouths, noses or ears, and tell the Activity Leader about any allergies.

DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BE MUSICAL?

Not at all. It's all about having fun with sound and movement, and no experience is needed.

WHAT IS A RHYTHM GAME?

A rhythm game is a playful activity that helps children hear and follow a beat, like copying a clapping pattern or freezing when the music stops.
